Digital Signal Processing Laboratory

The area of digital signal processing has advanced rapidly over the last four decades. This advancement is attributed to the progress in digital computer technology and integrated circuit fabrications. There are many reasons why the digital processing of an analog signal is preferred over the signal processing directly in analog domain. The advantages of DSP are common to many digital systems and include: i) Versatility- Digital systems can be reprogrammed for other applications (at least where programmable DSP chips are used), They can be ported to different hardware . ii)Repeatability- Digital systems can be easily duplicated and iii) Accuracy-Digital systems provide much better accuracy requirement. Tolerances in the analog components make it much difficult for the system designer to control the accuracy of an analog processing system. DSP is used in a very wide variety of applications.

This lab introduces students to DSP design and analysis techniques that are core knowledge for DSP engineers, and which serve as solid grounding for advanced level work in DSP. The lab aims at teaching the key DSP concepts, such as overview of discrete time signal and systems in time domain, and frequency domain, computation of Fourier transform and its efficient implementation, Discrete Fourier transform and Fast Fourier transform, the implementation of digital filters, FIR Filter design and IIR Filter Design, Multi rate signal processing techniques, Impulse response estimation, to implement the DSP algorithms in software, an introduction to real-time DSP requirements by exposing them to the use of some educational DSP kits(TMS320C63713) with real time capability, which will help students get acquainted with the programming of these devices and some typical hardware and functions found in practical applications such as I/O interface cards (A/D, D/A, I/O filters), types of DSP processors and their different characteristics, interrupts, etc.

Microwave Engineering and Digital Communications Laboratory

The laboratory is intended to make students understand the use of microwave components and digital communication systems in the field of communication.

Microwave engineering lab is primarily concerned with measurement of performance indices of transmission systems. In this laboratory course students will be trained to make measurements on microwave bench setups excited by microwave sources. This experience enables students to work on radar transmitter and receivers and modern day satellite communication links. Performance indices like VSWR, attenuation, directivity and losses etc. are measured and compared for different transmission systems. The applications of the measurements made in Microwave and communication labs are broadly in the areas of radar systems, satellite communications at microwave frequency in X-band.

In digital communication part, the characteristics of carrier signal variation with the digital input data is studied and implemented. In the digital modulation, we can learn the digital binary techniques like ASK, FSK, PSK, DPSK and pulse modulation techniques DM and PCM.

Ecad & Vlsi Laboratory

ECAD environments provide the tools for generating a physical representation of the integrated circuit from a high-level HDL description. The physical representation specifies how a particular part of the integrated circuit will be constructed. At the lowest level it is the photo-mask data necessary to perform the several processing steps. To simplify, a model based on material layers is used. These layers (forming the layout) are afterwards translated into photo-masks. The layout design rules are the link between the circuit designer and the technology constraints which the former must fulfill so that the fabricated integrated circuits may achieve a sufficiently high yield. ECAD tools always provide a Design Rule Checker (DRC) to inform the designer whether they are being correctly considered or not. For integrated circuits with millions of transistors, a circuit-level simulation is not practical and ECAD tools provide logic-level and register level simulators as well. A very important aspect in future integrated circuit design is testability. ECAD frameworks include also tools to support the design for testability.

This Lab provides students with hands on exposure to different ECAD tools like 34 user licensed versions of Tina-Pro, FPGA advantage software for VHDL and Verilog front end designs and The latest Mixed Signal Design Software "Microwind - 3 of 50 user's license supplied by ni2 logic, Pune for performing both Analog and Digital VLSI back end related experiments.
